Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster is criticizing the Environmental Protection Agency for missing projected deadlines in its cleanup of the radioactive West Lake Landfill.

But the agency disputed one of the claims in Koster’s letter and says some of the information his office called for would be released soon.

In a letter to the agency Wednesday, Koster’s office asked that EPA disclose a study on the extent of radioactive contamination in the Bridgeton-area landfill, where nuclear processing waste was dumped in the 1970s. Koster also asked that the EPA detail plans for a barrier separating West Lake from the adjacent Bridgeton Landfill, where an underground fire began burning five years ago.

Koster, a Democrat running for Missouri governor, noted that progress on those and other projects had taken longer than EPA initially projected.
