WTC Steel may be Used for Navy Assault Ship

Albany, N.Y. – A steel beam identified as part of the south tower of the World Trade Center will be removed from the Fresh Kills Landfill, Staten Island, N.Y., Dec. 27 and hauled to Pascagoula, Miss., where the U.S. Navy will determine whether it meets ship-building specifications. If it does, the steel will be used to build the bow of the USS New York, a warship named in honor of the victims of Sept. 11. The $800 million vessel is expected to go into active duty in 2007.
