SWANA to Create Policy for Product Stewardship and Producer Responsibility

Washington, D.C. — The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) plans to develop a policy for "product stewardship and product responsibility" for products that are disposed of, recycled or reused that are "subject to special handling requirements under federal, state and provincial regulations." With many states restricting the materials that can be sent to landfills and waste-to-energy facilities, SWANA wants producers and manufacturers to become active in the disposal process. Producers and manufacturers affect "the types and amounts of waste … generated," and "disposal techniques to properly dispose of waste," SWANA says. To provide input on the policy’s development, call the association toll-free at (800) GO-SWANA.
