Allentown, Pa. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved efforts to reduce pollution from the waste in the Palmerton, Pa., Superfund site. The 32 million-ton pile has been affected by decades of zinc smelting. It also contains tons of municipal garbage, the EPA says. The clean-up efforts will prevent New York-based Horsehead Industries from having to comply with a 1988 EPA decision to cover the pile with 18 inches of soil and clay.
