Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is calling for comments on its proposal regarding the treatment of low-level mixed waste (LLMW). Although the proposal is limited to one facility, the EPA says that it potentially could be applied nationwide if accepted.

Specifically, the EPA is proposing site-specific regulatory relief from Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) status so that small volumes of treated mixed waste can be excluded, and residues may be disposed of as low-level radioactive waste (LLRW).

The proposal is contained in the Federal Register/Vol. 67, No. 147/Wednesday, July 31, 2002/pp.49649-49656, entitled "Hazardous Waste Management System: Proposed Exclusion for Identifying and Listing Hazardous Waste and a Determination of Equivalent Treatment."
