Dallas Area Airport May Burn Garbage To Meet Eco Challenge

Dallas – Researchers at the Dallas Fort Worth airport are examining the best way to use the 190 tons of garbage generated per day as a power source. Officials are looking at three concepts from four different companies, including: building a power plant; using a natural-gas turbine engine, which is in two proposals; or building a fuel cell, which would convert hydrogen into electricity. Priced at $200 million, the natural-gas engine option is the least expensive, oficials say. The Dallas Fort Worth area has until 2007 to meet federal clean air mandates.
