Republic Agrees to Pay $10 Million Fine to Ohio EPA

Republic Services has agreed to pay a $10 million fine to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to settle all past regulatory violations at the firm’s Pike Township, Ohio, landfill, according to a report in the Akron Beacon Journal.

Republic also has agreed to divide the Countywide Recycling & Disposal site into an 88-acre unit that will accept no new trash and a 170-acre unit that will.

The violations centered around “odors and underground fires from a chemical reaction involving buried aluminum wastes” at the site, according to the report.
