Republic Landfill Provides Electricity to Bay Area Homes

A landfill gas-to-energy facility at Republic Services’ Keller Canyon Landfill in Pittsburgh, Calif., has begun operations. Ameresco designed and built the plant, which uses the gas captured from the landfill to generate approximately 3.8 megawatts of electricity, enough to power nearly 2,220 homes in the San Francisco Bay area.

“This is California’s newest clean, renewable energy source, and it will help the state meet its recent commitment to increase its renewable energy portfolio standard,” said Jeff Andrews, senior vice president of Republic’s West Region. “This project, once again, demonstrates Republic’s leadership in generating renewable energy from solid waste.”
