IESI-BFC Opens LEED-Certified Office in Suburban St. Louis

Toronto-based IESI-BFC Ltd. has opened a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified branch office in Bridgeton, Mo., which is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. IESI-BFC says the office is the first waste-related facility to achieve LEED certification in Missouri.

The U.S. Green Building Council awards LEED certification.

“A waste services company might seem like an unusual fit for the green category, but IESI is unique in that we are committed to significantly contributing to the sustainability of the St. Louis region,” said David Bahrenburg, district manager of IESE Missouri, in a statement. “We’ve gone beyond merely providing recycling services to our customers and are actually greening our own operations.”

Among the building features that helped the facility achieve LEED certification are a white roof to reduce heat island effect, abundant windows and skylights to make use of natural light, and the garage heating system’s use of recycled oil from the firm’s garbage trucks.

The $2.1 million, 17,200-square-foot building houses 60 employees.
