Covanta Extends Medication Disposal Program

Covanta Energy Corp. has extended its medication disposal program through the end of 2011. The program — called the Prescription for Safety Program (Rx4Safety) — disposes of medications collected by local governments, community organizations and law-enforcement agencies.

Covanta disposes of the medications for free at its waste-to-energy facilities.

The program was launched early this year and has disposed of 30,000 pounds of unwanted medications, Covanta says. The firm says it decided to extend the program, which was set to expire at the end of this year, because of its success and the feedback from participating governments and organizations.

When flushed down the toilet or placed in landfills, medications can contaminate the surrounding groundwater.
