State legislators urge electronics manufacturers to take responsibility for e-waste recycling

Washington state legislators are proposing a bill that will place responsibility for electronics recycling on manufacturers. According to an article in The Seattle Post Intelligencer, proponents say the bill will persuade manufacturers to use fewer toxic materials in electronic equipment and will remove the burden from consumers who have to pay for e-waste recycling. While some manufacturers support the proposed bill, others say that a fee should be added to purchased electronic equipment that will be used for collection and recycling efforts.
