Years-Old Dispute Over Fees with Jacksonville Landfill Operator Resurfaces Under New Administration

Mayor Lenny Curry’s administration is pursuing a three-year-old dispute over potentially millions of dollars owed to the city by landfill owner Advanced Disposal, but it’s still unclear how much money, if any, the company will pay.

The issue dates back to 2012, when state inspectors determined the company’s handling of yard waste at its landfill on Old Kings Road didn’t meet the state’s definition of recycling.

Advanced Disposal disagreed with the state, but its findings led the city to conclude the company could owe between $68,000 and $4.1 million in fees it charges the company per ton of waste brought to the landfill, which were waived because the material was believed to be recycled.
