Springfield officials have begun meeting with the four private waste-haulers that do business in the city, companies that have been urging local leaders to consider raising the rates they’re allowed to charge.
The city council sets the maximum rates haulers operating in Springfield can charge, which were most recently raised in 2003. At an $11.25-per-month charge for one can plus recyclables and $13.75 for two containers plus recyclables, weekly waste collection rates in the city are lower than elsewhere in Sangamon County.
Ward 4 Ald. John Fulgenzi this week resurrected the idea of eliminating city council-set rates, letting the haulers set their own prices and taking city government out of the business entirely.
