Pickens County Planning Commission Suspends Permit for Proposed Coal Ash Landfill

The Pickens County Planning Commission has suspended the land use permit granted for a landfill company after learning that it plans to use it for coal ash disposal rather than construction debris as had been approved.

The commission took action on the permit late Monday, sending a letter to MRR Pickens, LLC warning that its plans put the company in violation of a criminal offense “with punishment of a fine and/or jail time for each act or omission thereof.”

The planning commission approved the company’s land use permit on Jan. 12, 2015 after MRR representatives said in a public hearing that they had made “no changes” in their plans as presented when their proposal was initially approved in 2007.
