The City Council could vote on a proposed solid waste management facility near the High Rise Bridge and a 114-condo development in southern Chesapeake at tonight's meeting.
Hampton Roads Integrated BioEnergy Complex, which would convert household waste to energy pellets, would be built on a 64-acre parcel off Bainbridge Boulevard. The owners of the facility hope to receive the contract for processing the region's trash after 2018.
Before that can be a possibility, the council must approve a conditional-use permit and setback reduction. City code prohibits solid waste management facilities from being within 1,500 feet of homes. The proposed facility has two homes within that radius.
