Bourne, Mass., Switch to Single-Stream Recycling Depends on Town Meeting Vote

Bourne plans to introduce single-stream, recycling-at-curbside carts on both sides of the canal by August but the automated collection program must first be approved by voters at the Feb. 8 Special Town Meeting.

The endeavor is a shared planning effort by the landfill and highway departments, the town recycling committee, and facilities division headed up by Director Jon Nelson.

There are costs involved. The total estimated solid waste collection and disposal cost for the current fiscal year is $1.2 million. The new collection program should reduce that total.
