A huge plume of smoke went up from a burning recycling center in an industrial neighborhood between Torrance and Carson.
“It is baled, combustible materials. It is very compact,” spokeswoman Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department told City News Service.
About 170 City of Los Angeles firefighters were fighting the blaze, 75 minutes after it broke out, she said. They were joined by battalions from Torrance, and Los Angeles County sent five engine businesses, two trucks and two battalion leaders, according to a county fire dispatcher.
