NWRA’s FILA Board Elects New Members, Sets 2019 Agenda

The Future Industry Leaders Alliance (FILA) board met recently to review FILA’s Operating Guidelines and to further define and identify value for its members. FILA is the young professionals group of the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA).

During the meeting, the board addressed its key programs for 2019, adding new energy to how it contributes to the industry and its members.

“FILA is an important part of NWRA’s effort to recruit new people to the industry and strongly advocate for it. The Future Industry Leaders Alliance offers tremendous opportunities and resources to support the next generation of leaders in our industry,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith in a statement.

The Leadership Certificate requirements were augmented with greater focus on skill development and servant leadership. The board is looking to increase engagement opportunities for FILA members by expanding the number of committees. Those committees are: communications, education, events and membership. The educational portion of FILA’s 2019 programming will include two conferences as well as two webinars.

The board is developing plans for its Spring Education Summit, which will occur in conjunction with WasteExpo in Las Vegas. FILA will host its German counterparts from the BDE Junior Association, which is the professional group that hosted FILA in spring 2018 in Germany for FILA’s Global Summit. The group also discussed content and location possibilities for its annual conference, which will be held September 23-25, 2019.

The FILA Board will be placing greater emphasis on its social media presence, which the Communications Committee will oversee. Member highlights and FILA activities will be posted on NWRA’s Facebook and LinkedIn pages, and there will be news delivered regularly via Twitter.

FILA’s 2019 board comprises:

  • Co-chair: Josh Thompson, Waste Industries USA—serving his second of two years as co-chair

  • Co-chair: Brett Belda, SSI Schaefer Systems International

  • Treasurer: Mike Schmidt, Gold Medal Environmental

  • Secretary: Liza Casella, Casella Waste Systems

  • Past Co-chair: Zach Martin, Big Truck Rental LLC

  • Member-at-large: Sam Petersen, Petersen Industries

  • Member-at-large: Sean Mason, Sierra Container Group
