Waste Commission of Scott County, Iowa (WCSC) has partnered with California-based CP Group to decommission its existing dual stream recycling system and install a new single stream MRF. CP will decommission the old equipment and build, install and startup the new single stream recycling system, which will handle approximately 20,000 tons of residential recyclable materials each year.
“Moving from dual stream recycling to single stream recycling will increase the quantity and variety of recyclables recovered in WCSC’s service area,” said Director of the Waste Commission of Scott County Kathy Morris in a press release.
The single stream system will help WCSC achieve its goal of recovering more recyclables throughout Scott County while minimizing the amount of solid waste going to landfill. The MRF will also bale plastics, cardboard and other material from WCSC’s Electronic Demanufacturing Facility.
The single stream system is equipped with CP’s OCCScreen disc screen technology, which captures cardboard commodities. The system also features a CP Glass Breaker screen that captures glass and removed fines and a CPScreen that uses patented cam-lobe discs to separate 3D containers from 2D fiber, which helps WCSC achieve its targeted 95 percent material capture rate. In addition to those features, the system also includes a number of ergonomic improvements, such as the inclusion of maintenance rolling equipment paths that provide more access to maintenance and safety equipment.
“The layout has been designed to maximize the tip areas, processing areas and end-product storage areas such as bunkers and bale storage areas,” said Patrick Nicol, sales engineer for CP Group and designer of the system in a press release. “We’ve also increased the rolling equipment paths. This increases safety, improves ease of maintenance and provides better ergonomics for workers—all of which help to increase system uptime.”
CP’s electrical controls division, Advanced MRF, has been tasked with engineering and installing WCSC’s advanced electrical controls and UL 508A certified enclosures.
Startup and commissioning of the single stream system will begin in July 2016.
