SAN FRANCISCO - The San Franciso Recycling Program had been nominated for a public service Emmy award by the Northern California Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, San Francisco, for its recycling-related public service announcements.

Designed to educate children about recycling, litter prevention and the importance of buying products made from recycled materials, the four 15- second television ads were aired on 10 Bay Area stations.

The videos were produced by Planet E Productions, Los Angeles, in Chinese, English and Spanish, and feature six animated characters: "Crazy Can," an aluminum can; "Numero Uno," a plastic bottle; "Betsy Bottle," a glass bottle; "Daily News," a newspaper; "Jug Head," a milk jug; and "Planet E," which represents earth.

San Francisco's recycling program also was honored by Renew America, Washington, D.C., as a successful environmental program in the solid waste management category based on its program effectiveness, natural resource conservation, economic progress and human development. It will be listed in Renew's 1998 Environmental Success Index.
