Shoot to Kill

Who needs a scarecrow when you have a dead vulture? Tired of the thousands of vultures residing at a Palm Beach County, Fla., landfill, the county began allowing a U.S. Department of Agriculture biologist to occasionally shoot one of the birds and then hang it upside down as a deterrent.

While the fatal measure drove away thousands of vultures within several months, county commissioners recently voted to discontinue the program following complaints from Audubon of Florida. Fortunately, the waste authority still has screaming fireworks, paintball guns and laser devices in its approved vulture-fighting arsenal.
