Polluted Presents

Erin Spinka

SOMETIMES, THAT PERFECT Christmas present must go over the landfill and through the trash before it reaches its intended recipient. This past December, when a five-year-old Oregon girl was left without parents (her father was in the hospital and mother had died two years ago), a Utah woman decided to play Santa. With help from coworkers, the woman decided to send clothes and a few other presents to the girl. The gifts were placed in a black trash bag, but before being delivered, the bag accidentally was placed on the curb for garbage collection. After calling the hauler, the woman was able to retrieve the presents before they were compacted. Thankfully, to the relief of all involved — the little girl's holiday wasn't “wasted.”
