Teton County may become eligible this year for much of the estimated $8.3 million needed to rehabilitate its leaking and long-closed landfill.
The funding could become available through legislation for landfill cleanup projects, funding that Teton County narrowly missed out on during last year’s legislative session. The money would be used to cap the county’s old landfill so contaminants can’t leach into groundwater below the Horsethief Canyon facility.
Teton County could receive more than $6 million toward the continuing costs of closing the old dump and building a new transfer station. The landfill has been closed since the 1980s. The county now ships trash that can’t be recycled to a dump in Idaho.
