New York's Fresh Kills Landfill closed 20 years ago. Residents gathered to reminisce about the fight they had to close the landfill on Staten Island.

Freshkills will now become a park with an anticipated opening date of 2036. The park will be 2,200 acres, and the city is working to begin opening it in phases. The first part of the part is slated to open in Summer 2021, while others begin their design phase.

Teachers from local elementary schools will use the new space as a learning tool for students.
