Republic Services Requests to Expand Murfreesboro, TN Landfill

The Murfreesboro, TN City Council was surprised by Republic Services’ request to expand the Middle Point Landfill trash volume by nearly 95 percent. Republic Services has submitted a request to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) and the Tennessee Central Solid Waste Regional Board for the landfill expansion.

If approved, the existing trash volume of over 38 million cubic yards will be increased by 32 million cubic yards from the landfill’s backside.

A report shows that there is a 10 year and eight-month window of functionality left in the landfill.

The council agreed to have city staff prepare a non-binding resolution to send to the state and extended an invitation to Republic Services to come before the council to present its plans.
