More than 60 percent of the available space at the Juniper Ridge Landfill in Maine has been used.

A sign at the entrance says that waste generated in Maine is acceptable, yet trucks roll in every day with construction debris from other states. Massachusetts is the largest contributor of wood, brick, asphalt and debris.

Other waste includes "ash from waste-to-energy incinerators, food scraps and other garbage that Mainers leave at the curb" and sludge. As the landfill fills up, officials, activists and others are looking for solutions.
