Some residents in Pittsylvania County, Va., are raising concerns over the fact that the county is removing several green dumpsters to make room for new trash compactors.
The researchers found that seagull feces was responsible for the transportation and deposit of 240 tons of nitrogen and 39 tons of phosphorous a year into North American lakes and reservoirs.
Health regulators, who say the abandoned tires are both a health and safety hazard, have been trying to get Viva Recycling to clean up its 21-acre facility for more than two years.
The former landfill is a Superfund site because in the 1970s people started dumping industrial waste at the site. It’s estimated that 35,000 drums of hazardous substances are buried at the facility.
The local community is concerned about the potentially negative and dangerous impact on local traffic, an odor nuisance and the fact that the location of the proposed facility is in the 100-year floodplain.
