After listening to several bids, county officials in New Hanover County are considering a proposal that could net more than $1 million from selling the rights to repurpose landfill gas.

Earlier this week, a budget meeting in a New Hanover County, NC, local commissioners listened to a proposal to capitalize on fumes coming from the public landfill on Highway 421.

Joe Suleyman, Director of the Recycling and Solid Waste Department, said there are five bids from different companies to capture, process, and resell landfill gas. The best offer came from Archae Energy, a BP company.

Under this contract, the county would receive $300,000 annually via fixed payments, with increases tied to the Consumer Price Index. Arachae will also pay a pro-rated amount of $3.08 per BTU, based on the amount of extracted gas.

New Hanover County staff estimate this could provide the county somewhere between $900,000 and $1.3 million each year.
