Meadowlands Landfill Flare Burns Birds

Due to the incineration of combustible gases from decomposing garbage, landfill flares have caused burn injuries to birds at the Meadowlands facility. A year ago, the state said they would replace the invisible flame that has caused the problem.

With the fall migration season peaking soon, a new flare is vital after a red-tailed hawk was found badly injured. A new enclosed flare that was idle at the Keegan Landfill in Kearny may soon be operational to solve the problem.
