Following years of issues stemming from a rare chemical reaction, the Chiquita Canyon landfill has closed after 52 years of service.

Following years of issues stemming from a rare chemical reaction, the Chiquita Canyon landfill has closed after 52 years of service.

The site had been under scrutiny from area neighborhoods due to a chemical reaction that sent noxious odors into the area. This issue also caused Los Angeles County to take legal action against the landfill. The site’s final day was January 1, 2025.

“Chiquita had wished to maintain its crucial role in the community’s solid waste management system but has made the difficult decision to close its active waste disposal operations,” wrote Steve Cassulo, the landfill’s manager.

“Although Chiquita has available [capacity], due to the regulatory environment, maintaining ongoing operations at Chiquita is no longer economically viable.”
