Voters have approved a ballot measure to allow Casella Waste Sytems to add 107 acres to the 78-acre Hyland landfill in Allegany County, NY.

Once completed, landfill capacity will increase to 1 million tons of waste, up from 465,000 tons of waste a year. This will make it the 4th largest MSW landfill in the state.

Casella's next step is to continue to seek all of the necessary permits needed to begin the project. Casella also must secure approval from the state Department of Environmental Conservation of a supplemental environmental impact statement.
