Recently, a fire broke out at the Recycling and Disposal Solutions Facility (RDS) in Roanoke, Virginia that caused nearly $100,000 in damages. Now, the facility has no estimation on when it might reopen.

Roanoke County has suspended its recycling program due to the fire. A post on their website states, “Due to the damage sustained in the fire, RDS is currently unable to accept recycled material from Roanoke County.”

Ashley King, Director of General Services for the County, said that this facility is where RDS accepts single stream recycling. “We have five locations here in Roanoke County, and unfortunately, we were unable to empty those trailers on Friday due to the fire.  At that point in time, they were not quite sure what they would be able to do with us as far as an alternative,” said King.

County staff is working to find a different location to take their recyclables while King hopes to have the problem resolved within the next 48 hours.

The Fire Marshal’s investigation has determined the fire was caused accidently.
