A neglected landfill in the New South Wales region of Australia is being closed later this year.
The Murray River Council has announced a closure date for the Goodnight waste facility, which has been set up for closure since the adoption of the Waste Management Strategy in 2019.
The Goodnight landfill, which is currently managed by Cleanaway under a contract with the Council, will officially close on October 4, 2023. Cleanaway’s contract with the council will officially cease on that date as well, with no further renewals planned for the site’s operation.
Several factors have led to the decision to close the landfill, according to Brian Holmes, the Council’s Manager of Waste and Compliance.
“The Goodnight waste facility, open for only three hours each Sunday, has declined in usage over the last few years. In fact, the usage statistics show that we are averaging less than one customer per opening,” said Holmes.
“This limited customer base, combined with economic challenges such as staffing, processing costs, and site management, renders the facility operationally unsustainable.”
After the closing of the Goodnight landfill, the Council is preparing other, more efficient, and cost-effective waste management services for residents in central locations.
“The Koraleigh facility, strategically situated to cater to surrounding areas, will offer waste disposal solutions for Goodnight, Tooleybuc, Mallan, Speewa, Dilpurra, and Murray Downs,” Holmes said.
“We will continue to build on the service offerings at the Koraleigh location to ensure residents can access various waste disposal functions.”
