"Reliable" electricity is now powering 7,500 homes following the opening of Yaphank Fuel Cell Park in Brookhaven, NY.

The facility is built on the south portion of a landfill and is operated by FuelCell Energy, Inc. Electricity generated at the facility is fed into the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) system.

The landfill will cease accepting waste in 2024, at which time solar fields and harvested methane gas will utilized to power more homes in the area.
