The Conservation Law Foundation has lost an appeal to stop the 48-acre expansion of the Crossroads Landfill in Norridgewock, Maine.

Waste Management owns the landfill, and met all of the licensing requirements for the project. However, the Law Foundation filed documents with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to reverse the decision until additional requirements were met.

In 2019, the average pounds of trash per Maine resident was 1,260 pounds, up 17 percent from 1,080 pounds in 2017. As the waste volumes increase, the state battles with the onus of improving recycling rates.

The landfill is the only commercially-owned landfill in the state of Maine.
