Stericycle: Ebola Waste Not Coming to Utah

Stericycle will handle Ebola-related waste from Texas, but none of that waste will be coming to Utah, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

Jennifer Koenig, corporate vice president of communications, said Stericycle received a special permit from the U.S. Department of Transportation to handle waste generated from a person in Texas believed to be infected by the Ebola virus. The special permit was granted on Friday to the Illinois-based company.

“This waste is not coming to Utah. Our staff at North Salt Lake is focused on supporting the regulatory audits that are currently under way at the facility,” Koenig told the Standard-Examiner.

The permit represents a change in dealing with the waste for the company. The company refused to handle waste generated at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, when two Ebola patients were treated there.

Koenig confirmed the company’s initial reluctance to deal with the Ebola problem.
