Michael Fernandez resigned as the director of Miami-Dade Solid Waste District.

In a letter to officials, he stressed urgency in seeking landfill alternatives. A fire in February at the county's waste-to-energy facility in Doral, Fla. halted diversion efforts.

Fernandez said the county should "issue a moratorium to stop all development in Miami-Dade County or initiate the plans that were suggested in the past," such as considering landfill expansion.

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) of Silver Spring, MD is hiring a new Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer.
