A St. Catherines, Ont., Canada hazardous waste facility has been ordered to close following an investigation of a 2023 explosion that left one dead.

On Jan. 12, 2023, emergency crews responded to the scene after a series of explosions and a fire. Ryan Konkin, 37, was the only one in the building at the time. Konkin later died after being transported to the hospital.

"Our role is to respond to incidents to assess for potential impacts to human health and the environment, and work to ensure those responsible take appropriate actions to clean up and restore the natural environment," said the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP).

The company, Ssonix Products, and its directors, Steve Baker, Sharon Baker, and Tyler Baker, face a combined 21 charges from the MECP. Ssonix Products must submit a closure plan before March 31.
