Following a lawsuit, Judge Kevin Cox signed a restraining order to prevent World War II-era soil from New York from coming to a Michigan landfill. The hearing is set for Sept. 26.
The low-level radioactive soil is being transported from Lewiston, New York. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is managing the soil removal. According to the Army Corps, Wayne Disposal in Van Buren Township, west of Detroit, is the closest licensed facility to take the hazardous material.
