A nonprofit organization in Champaign County, Ill. is building a new hazardous waste recycling facility, following years of public requests.
“That was so frustrating to get so many calls from residents asking what to do with this stuff. And we were waiting for seven years,” Champaign County Environmental Stewards Executive Director Susan Monte said. “At one point in 2019, it had been seven years since our last one-day collection.”
Central Illinois has needed a location for residents to recycle items like lithium batteries, cleaning supplies, and bug sprays. Monte says that half of the $3 million needed to complete the building has been raised so far.
