City Council of Sioux City, Iowa, to Discuss Future of Glass Recycling

The City Council of Sioux City, Iowa, will discuss the future of glass recycling and the potential costs to modify the city’s current single-stream curbside program in a meeting today. This discussion was prompted by Van’s Sanitation and Recycling’s announcement that it will slowly end glass recycling services due to contamination concerns and low commodity prices.

The Environmental Advisory Board has suggested that the city remove glass from the city’s curbside recycling contract and add glass recycling drop-off locations around the city. This is just one of the options that will be discussed today.

The future of glass recycling in Sioux City will become clearer Monday as the City Council examines the potential costs of modifying its single-stream curbside program.

The council was informed of the need to amend its recycling contractlast month when Van's Sanitation and Recycling in Le Mars, Iowa, the company that processes the city's recyclables, announced plans to phase glass recycling out of its facility, citing contamination concerns and low commodity prices.

Melissa Campbell, Sioux City's environmental services analyst, said she has gathered potential cost numbers for four possible amendments to the city's program and will present the data for each at Monday's meeting.
