S.C. County Adds More Methane Extraction Wells to Landfill

A mountain of trash generates enough electricity to power 800 homes, but only if the waste is fresh and actively producing methane.

The county will spend nearly $300,000 to reach newer, rotting waste at the Berkeley County landfill and convert it into electricity.

Landfill methane, produced by the decomposition process, has been powering some homes in Berkeley County since 2010 but the existing extraction wells are running low on the power-producing gas.
