Methane-Burning Facility in Ohio to Shut Down

Toledo’s troubled $31 million facility meant to burn methane from the city’s Hoffman Road Landfill — a boondoggle that costs taxpayers $1 million a year to keep running — has been sitting idle for months.

Alan Ruffell, the plant administrator, notified Toledo City Council in a memorandum Friday that the methane co-generation facility was “decommissioned on Dec. 31, 2014, and preserved so that it could be placed back into service in the future.”

Councilman Lindsay Webb, chairman of council’s utilities and public service committee, said she was not surprised the plant was shut down but was disappointed council was not informed weeks ago it was decommissioned.
