West Hartford, Conn. is bringing a new way for residents to get rid of their food waste in 2025.

Starting next year, residents will have access to four drop-off stations across the town. Residents will be able to use an app to unlock a collection box to dispose of their food waste for no charge.

"Demand will push it to the next step," Phillips said. "It's a move-forward kind of process to introduce a system and provide a process for folks to start seriously exploring the idea of food waste diversion. It will give residents the opportunity to think about waste and dabble in food waste diversion."

Earlier this year, the Town Council not to move forward with previously proposed plans for a mandatory unit-based pricing trash collection program that would include a free curbside pickup for food scraps.
