Restaurants are battling the issue of food waste by offering smaller portion sizes through online ordering.
While the pandemic has limited in-person dining options, takeout orders have become the norm. Because of this, customization requests have skyrocketed based on individual needs. Data from China's most-used takeout platform APP indicates a 30 percent month-over-month increase in sales volume of users ordering "small portion dishes."
This has presented some issues. While the old adage says the customer is always right, meeting individual needs for each and every customer order makes for a logistical nightmare. In addition, consumers have an increasingly difficult time gauging whether the portion size is still sufficient.
Technology improvements have included the use of algorithm recommendations based on consumer needs and past purchases. Apps also can provide feedback back to restaurants such as whether the price/portion ratio is appropriate and whether certain options are working.
