The city of Portage, Mich. is partnering with My Green Michigan on a composting program to keep household food waste out of landfills.
Starting on January 6, 2025, residents can place their food scraps in special collection bins throughout the city at no charge. The containers will be emptied every other week by My Green Michigan and the waste will be composted into nutrient-rich soil to be sold at Hammond Farms.
According to Mary Ruple, Communications Manager, the year-long program costs $11,460, which was included in the 2024 general fund budget.
