Plastic reduction is a double-edged sword that must be fully considered for all of its facets. While the pressure to stop manufacturing plastic containers is often of high importance to environmentalists, it is essential to acknowledge their critical role in preventing food waste: another major point of concern.

Without food containers, more often plastic than not, an even greater amount of food would go to waste due to light exposure, bumps during shipment, and temperature changes. With solutions to these two problems being discussed by researchers, each potential fix requires complete transformations to the modern food systems.
