NRDC Food Matters is working to reduce food waste in cities. The Food Matters Regional Initiative was launched in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions to further larger-scale change related to food waste at a regional level. The cities in the Southeast include Asheville, NC, Atlanta, GA, Memphis, TN and Orlando, FL, while the cities in the Mid-Atlantic include Jersey City, NJ, Philadelphia, PA, Pittsburgh, PA and Washington, D.C. This follows 2012 research where NRDC identified municipalities as a key location for curbing food waste.
In 2013, NRDC piloted a city-level food waste project in Nashville called the Nashville Food Waste Initiative. And in 2018, NRDC launched an in-depth food waste initiatives with the cities of Denver and Baltimore. These three initiatives helped NRDC find new opportunities to help prevent food from going to waste, rescue surplus food and recycle food scraps.
