Food waste creates a problem when it’s not properly managed and it goes to landfills. Nearly 40 percent of the food supply chain is wasted and directed to landfills each year. (USDA) 

The city of Memphis, Tennessee’s The Compost Fairy is focused on turning food waste into rich soil that's put back out into the community through gardens. In addition to food waste the Compost Fairy is interested in composting Christmas trees.

Since the pandemic began, Memphis residents have been more mindful about their composting habits. The residential client base for The Compost Fairy has grown by as high as five times as many more residents are participating. The Compost Fairy also organized event to discuss the importance of composting since it’s the easiest way to reduce an individuals' carbon footprint.
