A nonprofit organization in Louisville, Ky. highlights food waste issues and partners with businesses to fight food insecurity.
The ‘No Waste No Hunger’ campaign of Feed Louisville has partnered with more than 15 food businesses in the city to set aside leftover or overproduced food, giving it to the nonprofit that will use it for meals for those in need.
“We know that Kentucky is the seventh worst state for food insecurity,” said Rhona Kamar, founder and executive director of Feed Louisville. “There’s around 7,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given day in Louisville. We think that those numbers are unacceptable, and we have built an infrastructure, a model that allows us to bring food in and get it back out to those people.”
“Overproducing food is inherent in our industry and when a restaurant or a caterer or a grocer has extra food that’s still viable, it is very easy for them to throw it in the dumpster.”
Feed Louisville plans to divert more than 400,000 pounds of food from landfills by the end of 2024.
